By late summer of 1804, the Corps of Discovery had reached land near present day Sioux City, Iowa. There, 22 year old Sergeant Charles Floyd fell ill with what was likely appendicitis. With no treatment options available, Sergeant Floyd’s condition worsened. The corps members and the captains anxiously documented their comrade’s rapid decline in their journals. On August 20th, 1804, Sergeant Charles Floyd became the first and only member of the Corps of Discovery to perish.
